Red Sox Talking To Veteran SS Rafael Furcal

According to multiple reports, the Red Sox have spoken to representatives of 36-year old shortstop Rafael Furcal. Other teams in on Furcal are the Mets, Miami, Washington, Pittsburgh and Colorado. Clearly, Boston needs some sort of protection on the left side of the infield—if, in fact, Stephen Drew sails off into the sunset. Furcal missed all of last year recovering from Tommy John surgery, but would be ready to start Spring Training. He's a three-time All-Star with a .281 lifetime average and a career OBP of .346. Thirteen years ago, he was the NL Rookie of the Year as a Brave. Our knee-jerk reaction is negative on this one—then again, we were negative on Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino last year.
