Sox Owner Werner Now A Legerdemain Entrepreneur

Tom Werner has always been the more interesting—if somewhat goofy—partner in the Red Sox ownership group. Principal owner John Henry is just flat-out weird—a bloodless Ichabod Crane look-a-like who often seems to favor foreign soccer over baseball. But Werner has a more human persona. After all, he has been hugely successful in the TV world—bringing America shows like the brilliant Mork & Mindy and the somewhat less-brilliant 3rd Rock From The Sun. Werner at least seems to have a personality—unlike Henry. Anyway, the former creator of The Cosby Show is now backing a very strange Broadway show featuring an odd-ball magician named Derek DelGaudio. He calls himself an "illusionist", but, come on, he's a magician. The act has been very successful (Werner does have a nose for these things), and has gained a sort of cult following among the beautiful people in Baghdad-On-The-Hudson. Apparently, the magic act is consider "edgy"—although from press descriptions we don't see what the big deal is. Anyway, it's making Tom even more money than he's amassed so far in his multiple careers. Said Werner: "I'm not looking to profit from it. It would be nice for me to break even, but the best thing I can do [as a producer] is to encourage him to be as daring as he has been." Yeah, right.
