Former Red Sox GM Mike Hazen |
Red Sox fans are all abuzz about the
potential of acquiring some additional starting pitching for 2017. But a baseball executive we
used to have has
already made a terrific deal for a young starter.
Mike Hazen—the new general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks—
acquired highly-touted 24-year-old starter Taijuan Walker from the Mariners on Thanksgiving Eve. In return, the D'Backs had to give up a great young shortstop in
Jean Segura—but Hazen was able to include a shortstop (21-year-old
Ketel Marte) coming
back to Phoenix. It's a gutsy—but very smart—deal by Hazen, who was highly regarded in the Boston organization before fleeing west. Hopefully,
Dave Dombrowski can pull off an equally impressive mound acquisition before Opening Day.
