Thirteen Years Ago Today, The Sox Signed David Ortiz

All In All, A Pretty Good Transaction
Somebody get Mayor Marty Walsh on the horn. We need him to designate January 22 as Wicked Good Red Sox Move Day in the city. Why? Because 13 years ago, on January 22, 2003, Boston signed 'Big Papi' David Ortiz to a free agent contract—off waivers from the Twinkies. Those of you in the Greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area, please stop reading right here. About a year before the Twins jettisoned Ortiz, David Srinivasan of the The Sporting News gave this scouting report: "Ortiz is a good major league hitter. If he gets a regular job as DH/first baseman, he could bat .275-.300 with 20-30 homers. He's young and he's got good power -- and he could develop excellent power because he's only 25 this season." Ya think? Anyway, many clutch hits and three World Series Championships later, this is still a good deal in our judgment. Nice move, Red Sox.
