Last Meaningful Issue: Will Sox Break 69 Wins?
At this point, almost everyone in the vast universe that is Red Sox Nation has given up the 2014 playoff ghost. So, we have to look at little milestones to keep us engaged for the final 48 games. You know, will Jackie Bradley, Jr. raise his average enough to justify being our starting center fielder in 2015? Will Christian Vazquez continue to look like the real deal behind the plate? Will Brock 'Babe' Holt come back to Earth or will he truly become a starting option next season? But the really interesting question is: "Will this edition of The Carmine Hose surpass the 2012 team in wins?" To refresh your memory, The Boys Of Bobby Valentine amassed 69 wins in that forgettable season. Currently, the Red Sox possess 50 wins—and would need to capture 20 of the final 48 (a paltry .417 winning percentage) to get to that Hardball Holy Grail. If they played at their current rate of success (.439) that would garner a whopping 71 wins—one more than needed to beat 2012's number. Can they do it?
