Mad Sox In The Blunder Dome; Boston Wins, 9-2

The Red Sox broke out of their offensive doldrums in a big way on Wednesday night—erupting for eight runs in the third inning on the way to a 9-2 laugher over the Rays. The big blow was a grand slam by Stephen Drew—only the second of his career. Will Middlebrooks also homered and doubled. The Carmine Hose paired their bat parade with another solid start from the undefeated (6-0) Jon Lester—who went seven innings giving up just two runs on eight hits. Consecutive hits by Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes and an injury chased David Price before Drew's blast. The Red Sox, despite poor play of late, are just two games off the pace in the American League East.
