POLL: Jason Varitek Is Clear First Choice For Next Retired Red Sox Number

With nearly 300 votes cast in our latest FenwayNation Poll, readers have clearly settled on Jason Varitek as the player most worthy of the next retired number on the right-field facade at Fenway Park. As the chart shows, 35% selected the former Boston captain for the honor—followed by Dwight Evans in second place with 18% of the vote. Roger Clemens finished third with 13% followed closely by Tony Conigliaro at 12%. Four players registered in the single digits: Tim Wakefield at 5%, Nomar Garciaparra at 3% and Fred Lynn and Manny Ramirez with 2% each. Interestingly, a full 8% of our reader sample felt that none of the listed players deserved the honor of enshrinement on the right-field facade. Also, 1% named players other than those listed as options in the poll (with one specifically naming Dustin Pedroia).
