With Devers Slumping, Will Sox Become A 'Darkhorse' Player On Machado?

Have you noticed? Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers has not been very productive lately. The offensive upside that was supposed to absolve his defensive deficiencies is not panning out as planned. The kid is only 21-years-old, and was probably rushed a little into The Show (although, to be fair, we strongly supported his promotion). Realistically, Devers would probably benefit from some extended time back in AAA. With all of that said, multiple sources are reporting that the Red Sox have re-emerged as a player in the Manny Machado trade sweepstakes. While the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers remain the top contenders for the soon-to-be 26-year old star, the frighteningly-accurate "Incarcerated Bob" lists the Red Sox as a factor—especially after the Devers dip. Machado, of course, is having another blistering season—hitting .322, with 18 HRs and 50 RBIs. Devers—after a promising start to the season—is now hitting a dismal .228, with 9 HRs and 28 RBIs. He seems lost at the plate, swinging at first pitches too often, and quite often popping up weakly. While a Machado acquisition might have complications (chemistry issues, positional preferences), it would really boost Boston's chances to smite The Empire and take the division. Stay tuned!
