It was in the mid-50s today in Boston—and apparently, the Cold War between the Red Sox and
J.D. Martinez melted along with the snow. The
Red Sox have signed the 30-year-old to a five-year, $110 million contract—with two opt-out provisions (one after the second year). This is an absolutely necessary signing—that should have happened sooner. However, credit is due
Dave Dombrowaki for getting a relative bargain—if you can call $22 million per year a bargain. Stay tuned for more details as they become available. Also, the contract is front-loaded—with $50 million doled out in the first two years. So, the average-annual-value is actually $25 million over that span.
