When (and if) the
J.D. Martinez deal goes final, he will don the Red Sox jersey number 28. For those of you who are Boston baseball history buffs, that number was also worn by the likes of:
Billy Goodman,
Wilbur Wood,
Dennis Bennett,
Sparky Lyle,
Bobby Ojeda,
Doug Mirabelli,
David Ross, and
Adrian Gonzalez. The last
two seasons, current free-agent
Robbie Ross wore number 28—so if he re-signs with Boston, he will need a new number. To that point, in order to accommodate Martinez, new manager
Alex Cora will switch from his previously-assigned #28 (which was to honor his brother
Joey Cora) to a new #20. Of course, if J.D.'s previous foot and elbow injuries prove fatal to the deal, this is all moot.
