If Red Sox Maintain Pace, They Would Win 93 Games

If your 2017 Carmine Hose maintain their current winning percentage over the final 35 regular season games, they would capture 20 more wins. Added to their current 73 win total, that gets them to 93 victories on the season (we didn't take "New Math" in High School for nothing!). Is that good enough to clinch an second-straight division title? Probably, but it's by no means a lock. Prior to last season's title (when they also won 93), the two previous times the team won the AL East, they collected 97 (2013) and 96 (2007) wins. In the much flukier 1990s, they won two division tiles with less than 90 wins (1995, 86 wins; 1990, 88 wins). Of course, in both of those '90s playoffs they were swept away (1995, 3-0 loss in ALDS loss; 1990, 4-0 ALCS loss). We all know what transpired in 2007 and 2013. The bottom line is that they probably need more than 93 wins to: a.) secure a comfortable division crown and, b.) go deep in the playoffs. History doesn't lie.
