Now Pitching For Boston, #31—Dana Eveland?

Eveland (L), Lester (R)
Pedro Martinez gets the special treatment—and so does Jason Varitek, Tim Wakefield and (amazingly) Roger Clemens. The treatment in question is the protection of a former player's number from being worn by a clearly inferior individual. Unfortunately, that favor was not accorded to Jon Lester—recently departed to the North Side of Chicago. Lester's old jersey #31 is now being worn by (get ready for this) Dana Eveland. Now, while Eveland is also a left-hander, his talent level is several rungs below Lester—several. Why the Red Sox chose to allow this (along with other indignities like giving out Wade Boggs' #26) is mind-boggling.
