Bud Black is the incumbent manager of the San Diego Padres—and the team says it wants him back for 2015. Nevertheless, the Friars are having another bad year (52-61, 12.5 games out), and they just hired a new (and somewhat controversial) GM. All of this is leading to speculation that the team might be at least considering other managerial options—and Jason Varitek's name is at the top of the speculative list. Present Padre President (pardon the excessive alliteration) Mike Dee was a Red Sox executive from 2002 to 2009 and knows 'The Captain' well. Word is that 'Tek's name came up as a potential manager during the recent GM search process. Varitek would be perfectly suited to the modern managerial role—as catchers have been particularly successful skippers of late.
