Why Spring Training Is Like The Movie 'KPAX'

Prot And The Produce
In one of the most memorable scenes from the film KPAX, Prot (perhaps an alien from a distant planet played by Kevin Spacey) tells his therapist Dr. Mark Powell (played by Jeff Bridges)—after chomping down a banana (skin and all): "Your produce alone has been worth the trip." This is the attitude we have to take toward Red Sox Spring Training in 2014. We can't dwell on the wins and losses (mostly losses), we can't micro-analyze every player's OPS and we certainly can't take anything seriously that anybody says—like Jonny Gomes spouting contract stuff. Basically, we need to enjoy the produce—which in this case is the up-and-coming 'crop' of talent we may only see in Fort Myers. I'm talking about position players like Bryce Brentz, Christian Vazquez, Garin Cecchini and Deven Marrero and pitchers like Henry Owens and Anthony Ranaudo. Let's enjoy the thought that many of these guys will be productive big-leaguers in the not-too-distant future. So, sit back, devour a banana and contemplate a bright future.
