MLB Will Use WBC To Test Expanded Replay

ESPN reports that Major League Baseball will use World Baseball Classic games played in Miami as a proving ground for expanded replay. Current labor agreements permit the use of review of fair/four and trap/catch calls, but MLB plans to use the WBC to gauge the feasibility of expansion to calls at home and calls on the bases. A series of ancillary issues also need to be decided—like whether to use the NFL's "sock flag" method or simply have a "review ump" make the final call. Realistically, none of these new replay rules would take effect until 2014 at the earliest. Whatever expansion is decided upon, it will need to be approved by both he players' union and the umpires' union.
