Mike Fiers and
J.D. Martinez were teammates together at
Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When Martinez sat out Saturday's game against the Tiger starter (a 5-0 win for the Tabbys), Fiers unloaded on his old buddy in the post-game interview. With tongue firmly implanted in cheek, Fiers said,
"He ducked me today. We've been talking about it all year, and I think he told Cora to take a day off." In fact, Martinez was out because of soreness from a wall collision on Friday—and is 7-for-14 lifetime off Fiers (including 2 doubles and 2 HRs). If Fiers in fact gets traded to the Red Sox, it's clear that his relationship with J.D. would be on pretty solid ground.
