Royals Swords Mightier Than Red Sox 'Pen, Boston Loses 7-6 In Extra Innings

A blown Craig Kimbrel save in the 9th—his first of the year—is troubling enough. But, on top of that, a dismal overall bullpen performance (five earned runs) is what really causes jitters in Red Sox Nation today. Two killer HRs by the Royals off the bullpen gave Kansas City a gut-wrenching 7-6 win over Boston—and cut the AL East lead to just two games over The Bronx Embalmers. Chris Sale went seven solid innings—giving up just one earned run—but was again denied a victory. Boston committed four errors in the game—after having muffed the ball only eight times in the previous 28 games. After falling behind 4-3 in the 12th, Eduardo Nunez re-tied the game with a solo shot, but—after KC scored three more in the 13th—a failed final comeback fell short. On the bright side, Mitch Moreland continued his hot hitting, going 3-6 with a HR, an RBI and two runs scored (now batting .323). Other than that, you can put this stinker right in the toilet.
