Red Sox Sign 5'5" Second Baseman Esteban Quiroz

The Red Sox added some insurance to their 2018 second base situation by signing Mexican Pacific League player Esteban Quiroz —inviting him to the team's major league training camp. The diminutive Quiroz (5'5") is often compared to AL MVP Jose Altuve. The 25-year-old is hitting .299 this year through 34 games—and never hit below .293 in three seasons in the AAA-equivalent Pacific League. In the last World Baseball Classic, Quiroz smacked two HRs—showing some 'pop' in addition to his solid average. In fact, in a recent Home Run Derby he clouted 29 HRs. It will be interesting to see if he seizes the clear opportunity to get some meaningful playing time in the early part of the season until Dustin Pedroia returns.
