John Henry Confirms Sox Will Exceed Luxury Tax In 2018

Apparently, Red Sox principal owner John Henry got the news. His stubborn refusal to go over MLB's luxury tax threshold in 2017 kept the Red Sox from getting a needed bat at the trade deadline—leading to their second-straight early exit from the playoffs. Now, the Ichabod Crane look-a-like has seen the light. Multiple reports quote him as confirming that The Carmine Hose will in fact go over the 2018 limit of $197 million. The anemic offensive display of 2017 requires the acquisition one—or more likely two—big bats. Whether this offensive upgrade comes through trades or free agency doesn't really matter—the threshold needs to be breached.
