The Strange Case Of 'The Mookie Betts Strikeout Spree'

(Getty Images)
We were getting used to it: "Mookie Betts is the toughest guy to strike out in MLB", all the analysts would tell us. And—up until about a month ago—that was pretty much true throughout Mookie's career. Then, something happened. Mookie began flailing at sliders out of the strike zone and whiffing on high fastballs. Just last night, he struck out two more times. Check out this scary trend: From the All-Star Break in 2016 to the All-Star Break 2017, Mookie struck out a grand total of five times. After this year's All-Star Break, he has fanned nine times already! What the heck is going on? Maybe John Farrell needs to administer a "Benintendi"—that is, a couple of days riding the pine. We know, we know—it's difficult to sit down a guy who was the MVP runner-up last year, but it might just do the trick and get him back on track.
