Finally,
Dave Dombrowski has resisted his compulsion to trade away elite prospects—as the Red Sox have
promoted third-baseman Rafael Devers to the big club. The top organizational prospect will join the team in Seattle and likely start at the
Hot Corner tonight at SAFECO Field.
This is the right move for the Red Sox. Rather than trade away a few lesser prospects (and/or players) for a 3B rental, putting Devers to the test in the heat of a pennant race (as the team did with
Xander Bogaerts and
Andrew Benintendi), will tell us a lot about the kid—who, after all, will not turn 21 until October. Devers, a left-handed batter, hit .355 in his short stay at AAA Pawtucket. All indications are that he will rake in the bigs. Bring it on.
