Cry Me A (Thames) River!: Sox Scouted Slugger In Korea
Ah, what could have been! Despite the Red Sox now pooh-poohing it, in fact, they sent Sr. VP of Player Personnel Allard Baird to South Korea last year—ostensibly to scout 1B/DH Eric Thames. You know, the guy who has 12 HRs already for The Brew Crew? OK, maybe Baird was just in Korea to seek a one-on-one with Kim Jong-un—you know it's a hop, skip and a jump from Seoul to Pyongyang. After all, the Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea loves NBA basketball, maybe the Sox could get him into baseball. Yeah, that's the ticket! Anyway, instead of taking a chance on Thames (who, to be honest, was a big gamble), the Red Sox settled on Mitch Moreland. Still, think of it—we could have seriously enhanced the HR output of the 2017 Carmine Hose by just one signing.
