Forgotten But Not Gone: Travis Could Contribute In 2017

Sam Travis, you may or may not remember, had a ridiculous 2016 Spring Training. The 23-year old first baseman/DH hit .469 and knocked in 13 runs. He was sent to the minors to get maximum playing time, but tore his ACL on May 29th. Season over. Spring Training forgotten. Potential shelved. But as the Red Sox cast about for a David Ortiz replacement, a healthy Travis could be an option. Dave Dombrowski's goofy revolving DH idea might actually enhance Travis' value. If a combination of Hanley Ramriez, Travis Shaw, Pablo Sandoval and Travis do the 'merry-go-round' thing at DH/3B/1B, maybe a front-line starting pitcher can be gotten with money previously allocated for a big-ticket DH. While Travis has resumed baseball activities, it's too early to know if he'll be fully healthy for all of 2017. But, if he is, don't forget about him—and the options he can provide.
