David Ortiz Makes It Official—He Really, Truly Is Retired

(Exclusive FenwayNation Photo)
David Ortiz has officially submitted his retirement paperwork to Major League Baseball. So all the pipe-dreams about his returning for one more year are just that. When the Red Sox exercised the $17.2 million 2017 option on his contract, some in The Nation saw visions of sugar-plum fairies dancing in the air. Alas, it would not happen. And so, the torch will be passed on to some lesser light like Edwin Encarnación, Jose Bautista, Carlos Beltran or (heaven forbid) a merry-go-round centered on Pablo Sandoval. But it won't be the same. It will never again be the same. Enjoy retirement, Large Father! You will be sorely missed.
