Mike Matheny's Kid Could Be Red Sox Trade Bait

Tate Matheny
As pointed out by WEEI.com's Ryan Hannable, there are other interesting Red Sox prospects besides Yoan Moncada, Andrew Benintendi and Anderson Espinoza. And, as Dave Dombrowski scours the trade landscape, some of these other guys could be "packaged" (we hate this term, but what the heck) with a major leaguer or two to fetch non-elite starting pitching (we're not talking Jose Fernandez here). Rafael Devers is the prime candidate on this score. Despite hitting troubles this year, the 19-year old is still ranked by many as the best third base prospect anywhere. Another possibility is the son of Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. Tate Matheny is having a solid year in Single A and showing the defensive skills he obviously inherited from his Dad—albeit in the outfield and not behind the plate. Stay tuned!
