Steven Wright Doesn't Pitch, Sox Lose To Orioles, 5-1

While the Red Sox offense is sputtering a bit lately, there is no doubt about the real cause of the recent tailspin: inconsistent starting pitching. In fact, if Steven Wright isn't starting, it's pretty much a crap-shoot as to whether The Carmine Hose can pull out a win. Last night was a case in point. Eduardo Rodriguez had another bad outing—going just 4 1/3 innings and coughing up five earned runs. While Boston only managed three hits, it's pretty hard for any offense to dig out of a hole that big. In fact, Boston did not, losing 5-1 and falling out of first place once again. David Ortiz did hit his 520th HR in the ninth, but that's about all the sellout crowd had to cheer for. Losing two of three at home to your chief division rival is unacceptable. Dave Dombrowski needs to make a move for a quality starter now.
