He will always be remembered as the guy we traded for the infamous
Eric Gagne.
David Murphy retired from baseball yesterday at the age of 34. He
had signed a minor-league deal with the Twinkies, but was languishing in AAA, and decided to cut the cord. The 6'3", 210-pound Murphy was initially drafted by the Angels in 2000, but did not sign. Three years later, he was taken by the Red Sox in the first round of the amateur draft (overall pick #17). At the 2007 trade deadline, he was shipped (along with
Engel Beltre and
Kason Gabbard) to the Rangers for Gagne.
Despite Gagne (6.75 ERA for Boston), the Red Sox went on to win the World Series that year (to be fair, Gagne
did pitch a scoreless inning in
The Fall Classic). In 2013, Murphy signed with the Tribe and then was briefly traded (ironically) to the Angels. He signed back with the Red Sox this year—showcasing himself in Spring Training and then signing with the Twins. All in all, Murphy hit .250 in just 23 big league games for
