The Red Sox will announce this afternoon that closer
Koji Uehara is headed to the 15-day disabled list. There is no further word on the nature or extent of his hand/wrist injury or the corresponding roster move that will be made. There is some
speculation—
completely unfounded at this point—that
Joe Kelly may emerge in the closer role until Uehara can return. Kelly clearly has the velocity and stuff to close—and his personality is certainly goofy enough for the role. Kelly does have dominant innings, but tends to fade in the middle of his starts.
