Red Sox To Sign High-School Lefty For $750K

Logan Allen—Next Jon Lester?
The Red Sox took left-handed high-school pitcher Logan Allen in the eighth round of the MLB Draft, but they're going to pay him like he went a lot higher than that. Reports indicate that Boston has a "verbal agreement" to pay Allen a $750,000 signing bonus—which will keep him from honoring a commitment to the University of South Carolina. The 6'3", 208-pound Allen was 9-0 as a senior with a 0.87 ERA. He already features a 95-MPH fastball. Some have compared him to Jon Lester. Allen had been ranked as the 128th best prospect in the draft by Baseball America—but 'slipped' to Boston at the 231st pick. Down the road, this could be the sleeper value of the draft for Ben Cherington.
