Twenty Red Sox players have done it twenty-one times (
Bobby Doerr did it
twice)—
hit for the cycle, that is. Today,
Brock Holt joined the club with a single, double, triple and HR in a 4-5 effort. Boston won the game relatively handily—
9-4—but it was Holt's pyrotechnics that were the real story of the day.
John Valentin did it last—way back in 1996—a 19-year gap between cycles.
Wade Miley had a very good outing, by the way, going 6.1 innings and giving up just five hits and two runs. Boston powered out eighteen hits—the four from Holt, plus three from
Mookie Betts and two each from
Xander Bogaerts,
Pablo Sandoval,
Mike Napoli and
Alejandro DeAza (who had three RBIs). Could this be a break-out win? We shall see.
