Oakland A's third-baseman Brett Lawrie has reached out to Tonya Carpenter—the fan who was struck by a shard from his broken bat at Fenway Park last Friday. Lawrie sent Carpenter flowers accompanied by the following note, "Sending my thoughts and prayers". On Monday, the 41-year-old Carpenter's condition was upgraded to "fair", but she is still at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The family sent this response to Lawrie, "Brett, they [the flowers] are the only ones by her side. On behalf of her family, we thank you for this lovely arrangement. You brought a smile to her face, the fragrance fills the room and she thinks of her garden. We accept these flowers and appreciate thoughts and prayers, we ask all fans across this country that you continue to pray for a full recovery."
