According to Jim Salisbury of
CSN Philadelphia,
the Red Sox are one of four teams currently in a "staredown" with the Phillies on a potential trade for left-hander Cole Hamels. The other teams are the San Diego Padres, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. Reportedly, Philadelphia is still demanding
Mookie Betts and/or
Blake Swihart in exchange for Hamels—a deal-breaker (and
correctly so) for
Ben Cherington and the Red Sox. As time drags on, Philadelphia's demands are likely to diminish and focus on lesser prospects.
