REPORT: Red Sox "Unlikely" To Sign Shields

(JOHN SLEEZER—THE KANSAS CITY STAR)
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal quotes sources that say it is "highly unlikely" that the Red Sox will sign free-agent James Shields. This comes on the heels of stories that Shields has a 5-year, $110 million offer on the table from a mystery team. The Marlins, Padres, Diamondbacks and Giants are reportedly also out on Shields. So, who the heck made the offer? In all likelihood the "offer" is just a phantom to goad teams into bidding higher on the 33-year old righty—but that's not happening. We also doubt the report that Boston is out of the running—they are more likely waiting for the price on Shields to drop below $100 million. Stay tuned.
