If
Mike Napoli turns down their offer of a multi-year deal,
the Red Sox may pursue a trade for Angels first baseman/DH Mark Trumbo. The soon-to-be 28-year old Trumbo is about five years younger than Napoli and is signed at a reasonable cost through the 2016 season. The problem is that—as reported by the
Globe's Nick Cafardo—Boston would have to give up major-league talent (likely
Will Middlebrooks and/or
Felix Doubront) in addition to prospects to get him. In four MLB seasons, Trumbo has hit .250 with 95 HRs and 284 RBIs. He strikes out a lot and has a career OBP of just .299. This past year, he hit 34 HRs and knocked in 100 in 159 games. He is a decent defender at first and would obviously be a right-handed force at Fenway.
