Winning Sox Showing Unique Team Personality

Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said it well over the weekend, "Everybody is very pleased about the fact the team has really come together. It's a fun team to watch." As we take stock of the series win over the Blue Jays (3 out of 4), it's increasingly evident that the team Ben Cherington cobbled together over the Winter is, in fact, likable. They are fun to watch. Although not quite as wild and wacky as the 2004 Idiots, this bunch of Carmine Hose has a sort of restrained goofiness—probably governed by the personality of their manager John Farrell. As in 2004, they are getting contributions from some unlikely sources—like they did yesterday from Brandon Snyder and Ryan Lavarnway. Jonny Gomes is not quite Kevin Millar—but he's not far off, at least in terms of his clubhouse value. In fact, Millar's best buddy in the world (Ryan Dempster) has been an on-field and off-field plus this year. Of course, a lot of this talk is meaningless unless you win. It's not so much team "chemistry" as it is team "physics"—whether you can hit and pitch the ball well enough to pile up victories. So, while this 50-34 group is not exactly Idiots II, maybe we can at least call them Kooks I.
