Springtime Brings More Angst To Red Sox Fans

Spring Breaks Over New England This Morning
As Spring officially dawns on New England (see photo for proof), Red Sox fans are met with a whole host of issues with less than two weeks until Opening Day. There are the injury woes of David Ortiz (probably out for the first month) and Stephen Drew (in Pittsburgh of all places for intensive concussion testing). The bullpen strength was diluted some with more injuries to Franklin Morales (disc in back) and Craig Breslow (shoulder). There's the question of whether BenCher will pull the trigger on a deal with either Texas (trading off some bullpen) or Anaheim (trading off some catching). There's the issue of whether the bevy of ThirtySomethings (Jonny Gomes, Shane Victorino, Ryan Dempster, Mike Napoli, David Ross) will be a boom or a bust. There's the agonizing question of whether Jackie Bradley Jr. (now hitting a mere .439) will be on the roster when the Carmine Hose take on the Empire on April 1. And, there's the question of whether Jose Iglesias (the default Opening Day SS) can hit enough to stay on the big club. Finally, there's the question of whether the generally good Spring starting pitching will translate into the regular season. Other than that, no angst at all.

  1. Jeez, you're the worst. How 'bout springtime brings hope as Bradley is hitting the crap out of the ball? Or that Middlebrooks wrist seems to be ok? Or that Lester threw six innings of no-hit ball the other day? Or that Napoli seems to be showing no effects of the hip controversy and is hitting? I know you won't care, but you finally lost this reader. Done with your doom and gloom.

  2. Dear Anonymous. I actually do care. But, I can't fake enthusiasm for this team. As I have stated many times, I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong, and we capture our 8th World Championship. Stick around. There'll be SOME positive stuff!

  3. I know what it's like to be a Sox fan and to be constantly let down, but aren't you tired of the last two years of constant media negativity? I totally understand Crawford's comments about the Boston media. They're (and you're part of this, sir) always looking for something to bag on to help lure in readers. Nobody wants to read about happy stuff, I get it. But let's move on, people. I also think they had to sign people like Gomes and Victorino--not just because they're good clubhouse guys--but because they probably have trouble luring the A-list guys to Boston. The media doesn't make it seem like a fun place to play.
