Ryan Westmoreland Retiring From Baseball

Ryan Westmoreland At Fenway Park
In a sad farewell to his dream of becoming a major league player, Red Sox OF prospect Ryan Westmoreland announced his retirement from baseball today. Westmoreland was drafted by the Red Sox in the fifth round in 2008 and signed a $2 million bonus. He was diagnosed with a cavernous malformation in his brain stem, which necessitated surgery in 2010. He was on the long road to recovery when he suffered a setback in 2012. It was too much to overcome. The Portsmouth, RI High School standout was considered to be a lock for a future Boston outfield not that long ago. In an email, Westmoreland wrote, "With a clear mind and heart, as well as the unwavering support and friendship of my family, friends, agent(s), doctors, therapists and the Boston Red Sox, I have decided to voluntarily retire as a professional baseball player." While we are sad that we'll never see Ryan play at Fenway, we wish him a happy and healthy future.
