Ivy League Red Sox Battery Outsmarts Empire

Mr. Smarties: Lavarnway and Breslow
Yesterday, something happened in the Bronx for the first time since 1883. Back then, Jack Jones pitched to Al Hubbard for the Philadelphia Athletics. Then, on Saturday, Craig Breslow pitched to Ryan Lavarnway. The connection? They were both a pitcher and catcher combo from Yale University. The Ivy League Red Sox combo resulted in a key eighth inning double play in Boston's 4-1 win. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine commented on his decision to pair the duo: "I got a lot smarter having them out there." Breslow, in his first Red Sox incarnation, actually traveled from Pawtucket to see Lavarnway play Brown. They've been friends ever since.
