Thanks to a misplay by Curtis Granderson, Pedro Ciriaco tripled in the lead run in the ninth (after Vicente Padilla had coughed up the lead to his nemesis Mark Teixeira). Adrian Gonzalez carried the day—going three for five, including a huge three-run home run off C.C. Sabathia. Jon Lester was better than his last outing (the worst of his career), but he could barely maintain a five-run lead provided him by the offense. All in all, a must win was won—the final,
8-6 Boston.
