Appearing today on
WEEI's Dennis and Callahan Morning Show, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington stuck to the party line and insisted that the Carmine Hose are "better than" the seven teams "clustered" ahead of them in the Wild Card race. Reading between the lines, it seems that Boston may be on the lookout for more starting pitching as a way to make up the "five games in the loss column" BenCher thinks can be made up over the next two months. He also stated that he has not talked to
Josh Beckett about possible trade scenarios, and thinks it's unlikely that
Carl Crawford will be benched against lefties in a tight platoon. Other than that, Cherington sounds like a very weary guy who sees the next few days as an important benchmark in his early legacy.
