Today marks the 40th anniversary of
the iconic Carlton Fisk home run that ended the greatest baseball game ever. Pudge's 12th-inning blast—willed fair by the catcher—gave
The Carmine Hose a 7-6 win in Game Six of the 1975 World Series and tied the Fall Classic at three games apiece. Said
Pete Rose in a post-game interview,
"...if there's been a better game, I'd like to know what it was. I really enjoyed playing in that game. They'll be talking about it for years to come." Alas, the Reds came back to overcome a 3-0 deficit in Game Seven and win the Series 4 games to 3. But, up until 2004, the Fisk shot was the proudest moment in Red Sox history.
